The work is located around Clapham Common tube station on the Northern Line; both the High Street there and the tube line itself run along the Roman road known as Stane Street, which leads from London Bridge to Chichester. This is a distinctive part of South London, where the expanse of Clapham Common gives way in abrupt manner to an everyday busy shopping street.

The projects lie on or across two sites; the smaller rather nondescript one is currently occupied by an Iceland store; the other is a significant corner site at the beginning of the high street. This latter was ornamented in the past by the entrance to the tube station, subsequently removed and replaced by a crude deep-level shelter and vent shaft outlet to the underground, which have blighted this part of Clapham, and the entry into London, ever since.

Students, taking a standard developer’s brief and working critically with themes of tectonics and region (filtered through Kenneth Frampton), have proposed urban design projects incorporating variously spaces for commerce, residence, community, landscape, and infrastructure. In Alberti’s terms: the city, ornamented.
